The Benefits of Pilates

No matter who you are we all have heard of Pilates and the benefits of this type of exercise.  Most people who have decided to try Pilates have reported improvement in range of motion, flexibility, circulation, posture, abdominal strength, and they have also noticed a decrease in back, neck and joint pain.

Pilates improves mental and physical well-being, increases flexibility, and strengthens muscles through controlled movements done as mat exercises or with equipment to tone and strengthen the body.  In addition, Pilates increases circulation and helps to sculpt the body and strengthen the body’s “core” or “powerhouse”.  This system of exercise was developed by Joseph Pilates.  As a nurse in Great Britain during World War I, he designed exercise methods and equipment for immobilized patients and soldiers.  In addition to his equipment, Pilates developed a series of mat exercises that focus on the torso. He based these on various exercise methods from around the world, among them the mind-body formats of yoga and Chinese martial arts.

Joseph Pilates believed that our physical and mental health are intertwined. He designed his exercise program around principles that support this philosophy, including concentration, precision, control, breathing, and flowing movements.  Today, most people focus on the mat exercises, which require only a floor mat and training. These exercises are designed so that your body uses its own weight as resistance.

Most fans of Pilates say they stick with the program because it’s diverse and interesting.  At the Women’s Health & Fitness Expo we will be featuring a Pilates Demo by Body Be Well Pilates owner Chelsea Streifeneder.  She offers Classical and Progressive Pilates Mat with added props to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and posture by incorporating floor based Pilates movements that stimulate the deep “core” muscles of your hips, abdomen, low back and spine. Focuses on breath and improves mental clarity. Chelsea’s approach to teaching is practical, hands on, extremely detailed, incredibly hearted, and accompanied with a bit of humor to keep it light!  Chelsea is passionate about sharing Pilates and strives to teach concepts as opposed to just teaching exercises. She inspires her clients to take what they learn in their sessions and apply it to their every day lives.  Which is what Joseph Pilates intended when he designed the exercises, he intended that people would be able to do these on their own once they’ve had the proper instruction, cutting down the need to remain dependant of an instructor.
